Marjorie Belle Atkerson, 89, died peacefully at her home in Delhi, CA on February 12, 2025. Margie was born on September 11, 1935, in Missouri to Joseph and Beryl Hanson, the fourth of nine children.
Margie was married to Gene Atkerson for 71 years. Together they had 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. Margie graduated from Modesto High School in 1953 and earned her credential in Speech Pathology from CSU Stanislaus in 1972 and worked as a Speech Pathologist at Merced Unified School District for 25+ years.
She enjoyed sewing, embroidery and making blankets for her & grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She also enjoyed reading, which she did prolifically.
She enjoyed traveling, going to China in 2006 and 2007 where she taught English, as well as going to Iowa and Oregon to visit her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a long-time member of Berkeley Ave. Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years.
Margie was preceded in death by her parents, her granddaughter Melissa Marsh and great grandson Jacob Atkerson.
She is survived by her husband, Gene, children, Claudia Gosnell, Joseph (Cindy) Atkerson and Lorna (Jeremy) Cook. Her 7 grandchildren, Scott (Angie) Atkerson, Jason (Beth) Atkerson, Jennifer (Robert) Renteria, Megan Godbee, Kyle Gosnell, Matthew (Patirica) Marsh, and James (Monique) Atkerson. and her 16 great grandchildren, Seth Atkerson, Micah, Isaac and Alexander Atkerson, Cody, Logan and Jake Renteria, Conner and Ethan Godbee, Caden and Abigail Gosnell, Kylie, Brooklyn and Ashley Marsh, Kya and Julian Atkerson, and her brother Bud (Pat) Hanson.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations being made to the Dementia Society of America, the Alzheimer’s Association or Community Hospice & Health Service.
A celebration of life for Margie will be held this summer.
