October 1, 1949- December 26, 2020
It is with heavy hearts that we share the unexpected passing of Jim Tavernas.
Jim was born in Turlock, California on October 1, 1949 to Mino and Bessie Tavernas.
He is survived by wife, JoAnn, daughters, Natalie Rebensdorf (Dave) of Oceanside, CA, Kristin Vilhauer (Craig) of Turlock, CA, mother Bessie Tavernas of Denair, CA, brother George Tavernas (Doris) of Denair CA, sister Janice Tavernas of Modesto, CA, and brother David Tavernas (Tricia) of San Francisco, CA; five grandsons Zach, Cole, Luke, Grant and Ben. He attended Gratton School, as his father and own children did, and graduated from Hughson High.
He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and returned home to settle with his wife, JoAnn, in Denair, in a home not far from where he grew up. He attended Modesto Junior College, and opened a landscaping business, but ultimately decided to farm the family ranch with his father and brother. Jim was proud to serve his community and was a member of the Gratton School Board and then the Hughson High Board for almost 20 years. He also served as Denair Fire Commissioner for 20 years, and was part of the California Canning Peach Association. He enjoyed being with his large Greek family and life long friends. He received the gift of life through organ donation in 2015 and with this gift was able to gain strength and watch his grandsons grow. Although the loss is devastating, he has made an unforgettable mark on his family, friends and all who knew him. He will be missed, but his spirit will be with us always.
Funeral arrangements have been made through Allen Mortuary in Turlock. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or the charity of your choice, in his honor.
