George Leroy Winters of Keyes, CA passed away at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson on Friday, May 19th. George was preceded in death by his beloved wife Dora “Pete” Winters, parents Alfred and Katherine Winters, siblings Grace Winters, Lucy Terry, and Fred Winters. He is survived by his children, Marty (Darcy) Winters of Keyes, Debra (Stanley) Stafford of Modesto, and Tony Winters of Keyes, grandchildren Briona (Dennis) Mendes of Manchester, TN, Brett (Alissa) Hill of Modesto, Brittany (Casey) Cotta of Bowling Green, KY, Brooke (Shawn Johnson) Hill of Riverbank, and Brady Winters of Norfolk, VA, ten great grandchildren and his brother Roy Winters of Keyes.

George was born in Forkston, PA in March 1937 to Katherine Ludora Burgess and Alfred Leroy Winters. His family moved to California during his childhood and they eventually settled in Keyes. He enlisted in the US Army and served from 1954 to 1957. He completed basic training at Fort Leonardwood and was stationed at Fort Bragg where he was in the 82nd Airborne and trained as a paratrooper. Following his military service, he returned to California and married his sweetheart Dora “Pete” Carter in 1958. Together they had three children, Marty, Debra and Tony. George worked for Superior Drywall for many years and started Winters Drywall with his sons.

When he wasn’t working you could find George on the softball diamond. He was a member, and Hall of Fame inductee of the Stanislaus Senior Softball Association. He thoroughly enjoyed his years of playing softball, usually at Beyer Park and often at tournaments in St. George, Utah. In whatever down-time he had left, George served various positions at the Keyes Volunteer Fire Department and participated as a member of the Metropolitan Car Club of Modesto. He loved watching sports, whether it was his grandchildren or great grandchildren playing baseball or football locally, or it was the fights on television.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, May 31st at Allen Mortuary in Turlock at 10am. Burial will follow at the Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson. The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Community Hospice for the loving care provided to George.
