Joaquin Lawrence Gomes passed away on January 9, 2024 at the age of 101 in Turlock, CA.
He was a loving grandfather to 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 25 great, great-grandchildren and 8 great, great, great-grandchildren.
Joaquin was born on April 30, 1922, in Turlock, CA to Joaquin and Evelyn Gomes. He grew up on a ranch in Turlock, where he attended and graduated from Turlock High School. After school, he served in the US Navy as a Gunner’s Mate, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class, serving on the USS MacKenzie where he was an instrumental part in the Battle of ANZIO. (Italy). He was also deployed in France, England and Africa. He was honorably discharged in June of 1954. Joaquin worked for Turlock Irrigation District for 28 years before retiring.
Joaquin married Margaret Fernandes, a widow with two children. He and his wife spent 28 blessed years together enjoying family camping trips, and many traveling adventures. Unfortunately, Margaret passed away in October, 1992 after a brief illness.
In 1997, Joaquin married Hazel Wade, where he and Hazel spent 26 happy years of traveling, camping, playing cards with friends, fishing and gardening. Joaquin was a devoted father, husband, brother and Christian.
In addition to his parents and wife, Joaquin is preceded in death by his brothers, Joe, Lawrence and Albert Gomes.
A visitation will be held at 9am, followed by a funeral at 10am on Thursday, January 18 at Allen Mortuary. Interment will follow at Turlock Memorial Park.
