Alfred V. Melena, Sr.

Alfred V. Melena, Sr., age 73 of Modesto, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2020. He was born in Newark, California and raised in Union City where he graduated from James Logan High School in 1965. He was proud of the many years he worked building automobiles for Nummi in Fremont. He lived in Modesto since 1988 and was an avid Raiders fan. He also enjoyed attending all kinds of sports games and loved listening to oldies.

Alfred is survived by his wife Flor Martinez; daughter Yvonne Enriquez, son Alfred Melena, Jr., daughter Yvette Del Mercado, daughter Rosa Rueda, son Robert Rueda, and son David Martinez; 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his three siblings Eufemia Estrella, Dolores Guzman, and Gloria Mayfield.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 from 4pm – 8 pm at Allen Mortuary in Turlock. Graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 1pm at Acacia Memorial Park in Modesto.

I will always be greatful to Fred Melena for being a part of my family’s life. He was an amazing brother to Amador, a wonderful uncle to Manuel, Suzie and Augie, a generous Godfather to Augie and a good brother-in-law to me. Thank you for all you were to us, you will be missed.

My favorite memory was when my grandpa would take me walking everywhere and make a game out of collecting cans. Id run ahead just to make sure I got them all. Until my mom got me in trouble for running in front of a car, to grab the cans for grandpa!

I will always be grateful to my Tio for the love I have for the OAKLAND Raiders I’m learning to except the change LOL! But If it wasn’t for my Tio I wouldn’t have been a fan all because when he and my Cousins would come over our Mom would make us clean our rooms and I knew he would be coming over so I would ALWAYS put on my Raiders shirt because I would always want to go home to spend the night with Cousin Freddy ” He and Carlitos had the Coolest toys ” but my Tio wouldn’t let me spend the night unless I was wearing something RAIDERS LOL! I will ALWAYS remember that but the best memory I’ll forever cherish is when I took him through the Raiders Locker Room after a game where I put him in Jim Plunketts personal seats at a game then got to meet players as they left after the game I know he loved that day ❤️❤️ RIP Tio , George Guzman and sons Richie & Bubba ❤️

Eufemia Estrella like many of us remembers Alfred V as a lovely and caring man. He visited Herman every day that he was in hospice and stayed late.
Also as many of us. They owed a debt of gratitude to Alfred for taking them to their first professional sporting event.
She will kiss her phone calls to him. Even if he lied and said he eat. He would ask him what he ate and he couldn’t answer. It he took her call knowing she would ask.

Grandpa would always come to my baseball tournaments, school plays and award ceremonies. He would take me to Target to get toys and always took me out to lunch on minimum days. He nicknamed me “Little Rascal’ and would always arrive to school extra early to get the best parking spot in front of the school.

I miss his laugh and company, but I will always have memories of all of the times we got to spend together.

Grandpa would always play this game on his phone call word search and he would say “do you know any words” and my brother, my cousin and I would help him with it. He made sure he went to our school plays we had. He was the best grandpa I could ever ask for. It hurts seeing you not here with us but, your not hurting anymore and that’s good. Love you grandpa.

My first Raider game and that was the day I became a die hard fan just like him and when grandpa would go to my football games and wait to tell me good job and how to do trick plays and tell me he couldnt wait to see me play high school ball. I love and miss you Grandpa.

I have so many memeories with grandpa some are very close to my heart. We would spend weekends together making food,watching La Bamba even though we”ve seen it a million times,going on drives while he would sing his “oldies but goodies” as he would say. And the very first time he held his great grandchildren. I will forever cherish all the times we had together. GRANDPA I LOVE YOU.
