Balwant Singh Garcha lived a full life to the age of 83. He passed away peacefully on December 31, 2022 surrounded by his beloved family. He was the husband of Gurbaksh Kaur Garcha with whom he shared 55 wonderful years, as husband and wife, creating a lifetime of memories. He was the father of Navdeep Bains (Balbir) and Sukhdeep Garcha (Guminder). His legacy continues with them, and Balwant’s five grandchildren: Amandeep, Harpaul (Kiranjit), Jasdeep, Harinder, and Simran.
Balwant was born on May 25, 1939 in Village Kohara, District Ludhiana, Punjab, India to Dr. Arjan Singh Garcha and Basant Kaur Garcha. He lived a very simple yet sophisticated life. In Punjab Balwant was a high school English teacher, a job he took very seriously. The love for his career was evident upon subsequent visits back to India where his colleagues and students from years past would recognize him and show profound love and respect, along with a story about how he influenced their lives. He was a man of dignity and respect, and he carried that out until his last breaths.
He immigrated to the U.S. in 1991 along with his wife to the Yuba-Sutter area. Here, he worked very hard in the farms and saved up for his family’s future. He called Yuba City home until his son immigrated to the U.S., when they decided to move to the Bay Area and finally settle in the Central Valley in Turlock.
Through his hard work and determination, he established a platform for his family to build off of, a strong foundation for life ahead. Balwant was known to be a very proper, neat, and well put together man. This was apparent in the way he dressed and presented himself, standing with great posture and usually wearing a suit. He carried himself as a man of respect and virtue.
If there was one thing Balwant loved, it was his family. He spent most of his later years with his grandchildren, loving and nurturing them above and beyond.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Arjan Singh Garcha and Basant Kaur Garcha, and his 2 sisters, Dalip Kaur Sekhon and Surjit Kaur Grewal. Balwant’s loss is shared by not only by his family, but by many others who knew him.
A funeral service will be held this Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Allen Mortuary, 247 N. Broadway, Turlock, CA 95830. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m., with final prayers at 1:00 p.m. held at the Sikh Temple Turlock, 1391 5th Street Turlock, CA.
