January 1935 – June 2021
Beverlee Anne Olstrom Schulthies Gurel, 86, formally of Lancaster, CA, passed away at Brandel Nursing Home in Turlock, CA on June 2, 2021. She was born January 29, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois to Anton and Hedvig Olstrom.
Beverlee work as a laboratory technician at Christ Hospital for over 25 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lancaster, CA and sang in the church choir. She worked with Larson Juls creating custom picture frames for clients and was a Creative Memories consultant providing classes and workshops for those interested in scrapbooking.
Beverlee loved the outdoors and camping with family and friends. She traveled across the country in her motorhome enjoying all the many state parks and campgrounds across the United States. Beverlee and her husband William Schulthies started camping in the 1960s with a homemade, built from scratch camper. They then upgraded to the “shifting shanty” which they camped in out at Lake Eliza every summer. Years later they upgraded to a Coachmen Class C motorhome and belonged to the Chapter 188 Coachmen camping club. They attended numerous state and international rallies and participated in hosting many events over the years.
Beverlee was also a huge Cubs fan. In her younger years she would pack a lunch, throw the kids in the back of her car and head to Wrigley Field. It was usually on a Tuesday as Tuesday was ladies’ day and she got in free. No matter what city she lived in she was forever a Cubs fan!
Beverlee’s lifelong passion was that of a genealogist. She loved researching her ancestry and sharing her findings with others. She was the president of both the South Suburban Genealogical Society in Chicago, Illinois and the Antelope Valley Genealogical Society in Lancaster, California. She had her family heritage printed into books so that her legacy could be passed down to future generations. She was very proud to have numerous articles that were published in a Genealogy newsletter The Trails End. Over the years she participated in many jamborees and kin digs and was always trying to promote the importance of the preserving one’s heritage.
She was preceded in death by her parents Anton and Hedvig Olstrom, first husband William Schulthies, second husband Mehmet Gurel, sister Doris Morrow, son Richard Schulthies and baby Olivia Schulthies. Beverlee is survived by her daughter Barbara Ruben, son Mark Schulthies and stepsons Erol Gurel and Doug Gurel. She is also survived by one sister Sonja Myalnd. Beverelee had six grandchildren: Aaron Ruben, Sarah Ruben, Rachel Ruben Davidson, Craig Schulthies, Brett Schulthies and Samantha Schulthies. Beverlee also had five great grandchildren: Chelsea Pierce, Diego Schulthies, Myer Ruben, Evan Ruben, and Owen Davidson, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Beverlee’s legacy will live on in our hearts and minds forever. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Beverlee’s honor.
