Carl Dewayn Roberts (4/26/39 – 2/25/24) was born April 26th, 1939 in Dyess, Arkansas, to Buff and Mattie Roberts. His claim to fame was growing up with Johnny Cash and witnessing him sing in public for the first time. He helped work the family farm with his brothers and sister until he was 12 and they moved out to Stockton, CA in 1951.
He grew up in the Stockton Housing Projects and discovered his love of golf and shooting pool. He would often caddie at the Stockton Country Club. He went to Edison High School where he met Dorothy Matthews. When she asked him when his birthday was and he told her April 26th, she thought he was lying because that was her birthday. They ended up falling in love, were married in 1958 and sharing their birthdays for almost 60 years.
Dorothy went on the road with him while he worked survey up and down the Western United States. They then moved to San Jose, CA for a couple of years where he worked at a paper plant. He was hired by Foster Farms in 1967 and after a couple years in Manteca, settled down in Turlock, CA in 1973. He began his long career at Foster Farms where he proudly drove truck until his final retirement in 2017. He retired in 2009 but found he wanted to get back to work so he drove for another 8 years. He was with Foster Farms from the beginning and even gave out free chickens to various grocery stores in hopes of receiving purchase orders for their chicken products. He was proud to raise his family in Turlock and was appreciated by his children, Steve, Tori and Scott, for making it a priority to be at every one of their sporting, band, or theater events.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Roberts, his parents, Buff and Mattie Roberts, and his siblings, Marlon Joe Roberts, Ann Blue and Herbert Roberts.
He is survived by his children, Stephen (Susy) Roberts, Victoria (Brad) Roberts and Scott (Debbie) Roberts. Grandchildren: Eliana, Dylan, Shawn, Seth, Staci, Shane, Skylar, and Olivia. Great grandchildren: Maverick, Emerald and Shawn.
A celebration of Carl’s life will be Saturday, March 16th, 1PM at 137 Main Street, downtown Turlock next to Memo’s.
