Daniel Leslie Smith (Whyte), age 81 passed away at home on January 10, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Dan was born in Vallejo, CA, the youngest of five children. Growing up he spent time in Sonora, CA and Columbia, CA. As Dan was entering high school, he and his mother moved to the central valley and Turlock became his permanent home.
Dan was married to the love of his life Mary Pat for 53 years. Together they made a beautiful life, raising their family in Turlock. Dan was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved camping with his family in the mountains. In his younger years, he worked as a bartender, and a firefighter, but made his career working in the electrical and hydro-electrical divisions of Turlock Irrigation District for 35 years.
Dan was a true family man. His family was his pride and joy and being a father and papa was what he took most pride in. He always showed unconditional love to his children and grandchildren and was the best role model, mentor, supporter and teacher anyone could have. Dan was a true friend to many and his legacy will live on through the lasting impact he had on all who knew him.
Dan is survived by his wife Mary Patricia Smith, children Karen Land and husband David, Greg Smith, Mary Vercammen and husband Mike, and Mylisa Casarez and husband John. As well as grandchildren Bridgette, Trenton, Nicholas, Jared, Eli, Joe, Tabitha, Michael, Sam and Drew and great grandson, Levi.
He was preceded in death by his mother Dolly Frances Megas, father Melvin Smith, step-father George Megas and brothers Kenneth Savage, Royce Savage, Eugene Savage and Byron Smith.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Covenant Care Hospice of Turlock for the compassionate care provided during Dan’s final days.
In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks that donations be made to Covenant Care Hospice of Turlock or Sacred Heart School of Turlock.
Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 6pm on Monday, January 27 at Allen Mortuary, 247 N. Broadway in Turlock. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 28 at 12:00 Noon, at Sacred Heart Church, 1200 Lyons Ave. in Turlock.
