On November 16, 2024, at 74 years old, Dhanwant Singh Bassi took his last breath of a life full of family, service, and adventure.
He is survived by his adoring wife of 44 years, Baljit. Their marriage would see them move from India to Ireland in 1979 and then again to the US in 1996 and was built on mutual support and immense love. He leaves behind a legacy of academic pursuit and kindness in his four children Preet Bassi-Turner (Maurice), Kavi Dhaliwal (Gurbir), Amita Nat (Manpreet), and Sukhman Bassi (Haley). He will be warmly remembered as Nanu by his four grandchildren who he spoiled and scolded in equal measure: Ranbir & Rohan Dhaliwal and Zoya & Satnaam Nat.
Following almost 30 years living apart across the world, Dhanwant would live out the last 30 years of his life in close proximity to his brother Gurjiwan, sisters Jasvir, Rajinder, Ravinder, Parminder, and Baljinder, and his parents, the late Sohan Singh and late Gurcharn Kaur. His extended family including his aunts, uncles, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins who were his greatest pride and joy. His heart was so big it easily grew to consider his mother-in-law, Amar Kaur Samra, as a second mom.
A dedicated volunteer at the Turlock Sikh Temple, he believed it his civic duty to keep the gurdwara in good working order and assist fellow worshippers transition to life in the US. He truly embodied seva. A self-taught chef, he would enjoy a career in restaurants, but the cooking he did for his family is what he will be remembered for. He is best known for his sharp mind, brutal honesty, and sweet tooth. He will be cherished by all he touched as one-of-a-kind.
Funeral services will be held at Allen Mortuary (247 N Broadway, Turlock, CA 95380) on Monday November 25th at 10am. For those unable to join us in person, the funeral will be webcast. All mourners are invited to join the family at the Sikh Temple (1391 Fifth Street, Turlock, CA 95380) for a Phog following the cremation.
