Doris Hedberg Yohanan
October 22, 1928 – November 28, 2024
Doris Yohanan passed away peacefully in Turlock CA, the city where she was born 96 years earlier. Doris grew up in and around Denair, Hughson, and Turlock. She married Stanley Hedberg in 1950 and moved to Modesto where they raised three children. Stan died in 1988 just as plans for retirement had been taking shape. In 1998 Doris married a former Turlock High schoolmate, Walter “Jim” Yohanan. He died in 2007 and in 2019 Doris moved to Covenant Living in Turlock.
Doris began her teaching career with a provisional teaching certificate offered during an exceptional teacher (and classroom) shortage when she was just 19. Her first classroom was a renovated furnace room in an old school building in Hughson. She taught for 2 years before pausing to raise a family, then resumed her education, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1964, and went on to teach elementary school in the Sylvan Unified School District for 26 years.
Faith played an important role in Doris’ life, from her first days in a Denair Methodist Church Sunday School to founding member of the Modesto Covenant Church and beyond. Her kind and gentle spirit served her well as teacher, docent at “The McHenry Mansion”, Grandmother, and Deaconess.
Over the years she enjoyed traveling, visiting Europe, Australia, and Africa. Summers usually included a week at Pinecrest Lake surrounded by a growing troupe of grandchildren, then great-grandchildren. And then there were the Scandifests to get ready for…
Doris is survived by her children Becky Coleman (Paul Meunier), Kris Evans, Paul Hedberg (Angela), 5 grandchildren (Matt [Lauren], Andi, Andrew, Sierra [Rob], Eric, and 6 great-grandchildren (Elowyn, Bhody, Emma, Anna, Farah Sophia, and Forest. In addition to Stan and Jim, she was preceded in death by a son in law, Randy Evans, and a grandson, Ben Hedberg.
A Memorial Service and reception will be held at 2 PM on January 4, 2025, in Berg Hall, Covenant Living, 2125 N Olive Avenue, Turlock, CA 95382.
Remembrances should be made to the Covenant Living Benevolent Fund or a charity of your choice.
