Gene Frank Trimble was born on September 3, 1940, in Bessemer, Alabama to William and Myrtie Trimble. He was the youngest of three sons and named by his middle brother Joe after cowboy movie star Gene Autry.
He grew up in Alabama and attended high schools in Alabama and Texas. Gene graduated from the University of Alabama in 1960. He joined the Marines in 1961 and rose to the rank of Captain. As a young professional, he worked as a bank examiner in California and Hawaii. Gene met his wife Judy when they both resided at the same apartment complex in Hollywood after Judy noted he looked like actor Robert Vaughn. They married in December 1965. He received his M.B.A. from the University of Southern California in 1966. Gene returned to Alabama and received his J.D. from the University of Alabama in 1968. He was sworn in as a member of the California State Bar in June 1970. He began his legal career in private practice in Concord, California. In 1976, he moved to Modesto after being hired by the Stanislaus County Public Defender’s Office. He worked as a Chief Deputy Public Defender for 20 years before resuming private practice with his daughter.
Gene was known for his loud laugh that could be heard up and down the courthouse hallways which he perfected as a child to annoy his brother at the movies. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and flying.
