1923 – 2018
Born Irene Mildred Jones on June 4, 1923 in Port Chicago, CA. She graduated in 1940 from Portola High School, Portola, Ca.
She eloped with her high school sweetheart, Ray Coleman during the senior prom for a double wedding with Ray’s older brother, Shep and his sweetheart, Carmen Landaburu.
The couple moved to Louisiana, Ray’s place of birth, where she taught school in a one room school house.
They relocated to California shortly after the war broke out to work in the shipyards in Richmond. Irene was “Rosie the Riveter.”
Irene was a lifelong member of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron numerous times. She was an avid bowler, golfer and loved her flower garden. But most of all, she loved her grandchildren.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Sue CJ Ernest of Turlock and Judy Clark of Utah. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren.
Services will be held at Allen Mortuary on Friday, November 30th at 10:00 AM.
