April 1949 – October 2019
Jeanie D. Nelson was born in Bakersfield, California to Oliver and Alice Burr. A beloved daughter and the youngest of three sisters. She loved animals and wanted to marry a farmer. In 1969, Jeanie transferred from Bakersfield Junior College to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo where she met her future husband, a dairy farmer, Dennis Nelson. Jeanie and Dennis were married on September 11, 1971. Upon finishing college with a BA in education, she and Dennis moved to Hilmar, to the Nelson family dairy, and she began a teaching career at Hilmar Junior High School.
Jeanie taught for four years until she began her family. Jeanie and Dennis raised two children, Erik, who passed in 1994, and their daughter Kate (Andrew) Dargatz. Erik had special needs and upon his death, Jeanie was motivated to get a degree in Special Ed, which she taught for 17 more years. Jeanie was an inspiration to her students and stayed in touch with many of them after their graduation.
Throughout her life, Jeanie was devoted to her family and friends, the Nelson Dairy, was very involved in California Women for Agriculture and loved being a grandmother. She is and will always be Grandma Moo.
Jeanie was preceded in death by her parents Oliver and Alice Burr and son Erik Nelson. Surviving family members are her husband Dennis Nelson, her sisters Susan Ericson and Nancy (Martin) Vandernoot, daughter Kate (Andrew) Dargatz and grandchildren, Emmett and Ada.
Jeanie was a very special woman, sister, wife, mother and friend. She could brighten any room and lift every heart she touched.

Jeannie was a friend who truly gave everything to that friendship. She helped me and my family when she barely knew us. She helped many children who had special needs feel like they were just as “normal” as the next child. She never made you feel as though you were different. This was a gift, she shared often.
She was the kind of friend, even if you haven’t seen each other in awhile it was as if no time had passed and you had seen each other everyday.
She will be missed by all who called her friend.
My thoughts and prays go to Dennis and Katie

November 4, 2019 at 6:50 pmMy name is Chris Cox(former student), and Jeanie was my SDC resource teacher. I will miss her very much. We were going to go out to eat for my birthday celebration for this year, but we never met up. Dennis and the kids. She was such a dedicated teacher and a dedicated teacher to her students and well as to the faculty and students of Hilmar High School. So many people will miss her, and her love will go on forever.

November 3, 2019 at 7:39 pmMany fond memories of Jeanie in my childhood neighborhood. SPECIAL. Doesn’t begin to say enough about this dear person. I will always remember her rendition of “‘Cigars-Cigarettes ” which we older kids requested her to perform. Her older sisters treated her so kindly which says a lot about the parents too. Thanks to Chris Andre we recently rendezvoused and I was able to greet Jeanie after so many years Prayers going out to all her dear ones.Mugs Olsen Borel

November 2, 2019 at 1:11 amI will never forget the time Johnny and I went to her house to let her borrow a crib for her new grandson. She was so excited that he was coming to visit. We had a blast talking eating her fancy popcorn and tasting tequila. I loved when she came to get her hair done. I would call her my psychologists. She was a great listener and always had advise for me. As she left she always said she you next time sweet pea. She will truly be missed.
