Leopoldo Leo Salcedo October 29, 1944 - April 19, 2021

|

October 29, 1944 – April 19, 2021

Leo was born in Mascota, Jalisco, Mexico and was called home to meet with the Lord on April 19, 2021.  At the age of 76, he leaves behind his devoted wife of 51 years, Maria Socorro Salcedo, his three loving sons, Richard Salcedo (Fern), Albert Salcedo, and Alex Salcedo (Debbie), his siblings Alicia Salcedo, Beatrice Salerno, Gilbert and Rebecca Pizano, Susana Peterson, and Yolanda Souza. In addition, he also leaves behind his grandchildren, Matthew Salcedo (Richard Salcedo’s Son), Aiden, Jackson, and Gracelyn Salcedo (Alex and Debbie Salcedo’s Children), Joseph Truett, Elizabeth Fairess, Monique Rodriquez and Natalia Salcedo (Albert Salcedo’s Children), and a great grandchild.

He is preceded in death by his son, Steven Salcedo,  his mother, Esperanza Pizano, and his step-father, Luis Pizano.

At a young age, Leo lived in Mexico for about five years, until his family decided to immigrate to the United States in 1949. In 1964, he joined the army and served in South Korea.  Once he completed his tour of duty, he lived in Oakland, where he met the love of his life, Maria Lopez,  in 1968. After being married for 3 years, they moved to Newman and then settled in Turlock for 25 years. After retirement, they moved into their forever home in Chowchilla.

Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with cancer in 2019 and moved back to Turlock to be closer to his family. During his treatment, he fought hard, but eventually succumbed to his illness surrounded by his wife and children.

During his time in the Army, he became a E-5 Sergeant, receiving many commendations and recognition awards. When others were taking smoke breaks, Leo could be found in the shooting range honing his skills. This was time well spent because he was awarded the expert marksman commendation.

Leo also worked at Proctor and Gamble for 30 years. He was a hardworking man providing for his family to live the American dream. Leo worked in the Electrical and Instrumentation Department, supporting production lines and continuous improvement upgrade projects. During this time, he encouraged learning to his sons by bringing home computer systems from the industrial environment and setting them up in his shop.

Leo was an avid technology buff. He was always bringing home computer systems and the newest gaming stations. Leo was a jack of all trades with woodworking, electrical, and home and garden. He even built additions to his home to accommodate his growing family.

His hobbies included golf, going to Giants’ games, watching football, and completing projects around the house. Most of all, he enjoyed being a patriot to his country and advocate for freedom and liberty.

Viewing at Allen Mortuary on Monday, April 26, 2021 at 5pm. Recitation of the Rosary will also be at Allen Mortuary Monday, April 26, 2021 at 6pm.

  2. Brian Robert Souza - Son of Yolanda Souza says

As Leo’s nephew, he and I mostly only saw each other at family gatherings or the occasional visit. As a kid, whenever Leo was around, I knew an intellectual and a successful man was present. Someone calm and stable and curious about me. Even with our few interactions, Leo still found a way to have an impact on me growing up.

As a young kid, I remember Leo driving me to a Giants game to share his passion for baseball. But the game was a means to much more. I wondered why he was so generous to spend time with me. He used the long drive to the bay area as an opportunity to mentor me and talk to me about success and why having goals are important in life. He pressed me to think about the future and what I wanted it to look like. This small instance is a reflection of the kind of man he was not just to me but in general. He was the kind of man who would go out of his way to be a positive influence on a boy he only saw at Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Another impression I have of Leo was when he showed me the Internet. He sat with me and as I logged on for the first time, and he talked about all the knowledge I would be able to gain, but also warned me of the potential dangers I might encounter on the internet. Leo seemed to always know the right message at the right time.

These small memories were important to a boy like growing up in a sometimes chaotic environment. I would like to think that though we were not close, Leo helped show me what it means to share your passion with someone in order to teach about life skills, and how important it is to be a positive role model for your family, even those you only occasionally see. Thank you Leo.

  7. Lee Beckner says

Leo and I would talk sports and politics at family gatherings and he keenly knew every statistic and fact. As much as he loved those topics, he was most passionate about his family. We miss spending Christmas day at the Chowchilla home. May God bless Mary and the rest of the family.

  8. Roger Jackson says

I really enjoyed working with Leo at Procter and Gamble in the 1970s and 80s. Leo took many of us to Giants games. After work, we would get into his van and make the trip to Candlestick Park. And, on swing shift, Leo would go out to his van and tune in to the Giants game. He was very proud of his family and his home and always shared his latest home projects. He was a believer in hard work. He had the greatest humor and laughed all the time! He truly was a wonderful influence in my life!
