Lidia Bettencourt, of Turlock, California, was born on August 6, 1923 and entered into eternal
rest on April 12, 2021. Lidia was born in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Azores. She was the 7th
of eight children of Jose de Couto Mota and Maria de Ascensão Medeiros. Lidia married the
love of her life, Manuel Bettencourt, an American of Portuguese descent, in 1948, before
immigrating to the United States. She enjoyed working on the family farm, as well as Patterson
Frozen Foods. Lidia valued God and family most. She had an affinity for agriculture and
education. Lidia was very proud to be an American Citizen. She always had a passion for
gardening, cooking for family, and baking masa sovada during the holidays. Lidia was a devout
Catholic who always promoted love and peace. She was a brilliant woman who excelled
academically. She was very witty and had a great sense of humor. Lidia was predeceased by her
beloved husband, Manuel, daughters-in-law, Shere Bettencourt and Louise Bettencourt, as well
as sons-in-law George M. Costa, Jr. and James H. Fox. She is survived by her daughters Beverly
(Joe) MorÃn, Nancy Fox (Joseph) Ben, as well as sons Anselmo (Debbie) Bettencourt and
Stanley (Joanne) Bettencourt. She was immensely proud of her 14 grandchildren, Michael
(Melinda) Maier, Jennifer (Michael) Galas, Kristi (Adam) Britton, Katie (Darin) Kelley, Karen
Bettencourt (Mike Riley), Kristie Nelson (Ranier Ramirez), Cheryl (Rene) Saroukhanoff, Leslie
(Anthony) Roche, DeLynn (Mark) Hammell, Andy (Liz) Bettencourt, Jean (Steven) Kirkland,
Jamie (James) Myers, Janae (Adam) Tovar, and Justin (Ashley) Costa. Lidia loved spending
time with her family, particularly her 26 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She
is also survived by one sister, Maria Jose Medeiros of Rhode Island and many nieces and
nephews. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Recitation of the Holy Rosary
will be held at Sacred Heart Church, Turlock on Monday, April 19, 2021 at noon, followed by a
memorial mass.
