June 4, 1925 – April 26, 2022
Mamie Travis Bettencourt, 96 of Turlock, died on April 26, 2022 after a brief illness. She was born on June 4, 1925 in Keota, Oklahoma, to John and Martha (Casey) Johnson.
She came to California in 1936 and briefly returned to Oklahoma, living in Claremore before returning to California in 1939 and lived in San Jose. She followed the cotton and fruit harvest and then married George Travis in 1944 and settled in Turlock. After George’s death, Mamie married Francis Bettencourt in 1978.
Mamie owned and operated the Patio beauty salon in Turlock from 1963 until 1988.
She was a member of the SES Portuguese fraternity. She enjoyed line dancing for many years and led many classes up into her 80’s. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting and would donate many blankets to the care center at Christmas time. She loved doing her jigsaw puzzles, setting them up in the lobby, where many residents and workers would stop by and chat and help put in a few pieces.
Mamie is survived by her nieces and nephews: Debbie (Bob) Wattles, Linda (Bob) Shearer, Eddie (Cindy) Bettencourt, and Lora Lee Brunelle.
Besides her husbands, Mamie is preceded in death by all of her siblings.
A service will be held for Mamie on Friday, May 6, 2022 at 1:00 pm at the Chapel of the Flowers Mausoleum at Turlock Memorial Park.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Covenant Care Hospice 125 N. Broadway, Suite 1A, Turlock CA 95380 (209) 664-2550.
