Mariquita of Santiago, Chile was a much loved sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, and dear friend to many, passed away on Friday, February 10 at the age of 99 in Ripon, California.
Born in London, England to Edythe Barnett Tuker and William Edred Sanger Tuker . She was raised in Chile, attended and graduated from Santiago College, married Leland G. Means Jr. in Viña Del Mar in 1945. They were married 57 years , until Leland passed away in 2002 in Los Altos , California.
In Chile, they raised two children, Duncan T. Means (deceased) and Jennifer Means. Mariquita was an avid gardener, devoted member of the Anglican Church , active in the alumni association of Santiago College, and traveled often to the United States, Europe, and Latin America .
In 1970, Mariquita, her husband , and mother moved to Portland, Maine. Later relocated to Los Altos, California, because of her husband’s new job . She became very involved in Christ Church of Los Altos, busy making new friends, as well as gathering often with old friends from Chile to celebrate Chilean holidays .
In 2003 she returned to Santiago and enjoyed being close to family and friends. In 2011 she came back to California to live with her daughter for a few years, and finally moved into a nursing home in 2013.
Mariquita is predeceased by her sister Gwynneth, husband Leland, son Duncan T. Means , and granddaughter Dr. Lauren E. Sampson.
She is survived by her daughter Jennifer Sampson (Phil) of Turlock , California, nieces Gail Porta Balaresque (Paul) of Chile and Loraine Porta Casey (John) of Melbourne, Australia, granddaughters April Sampson of San Mateo, California, and Jennifer Means Dieryck (Cyrille) of France, grandsons Christopher (Blanca) of Chicago and Nicholas of Amsterdam and 6 great grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to Christ Church of Los Altos, California.
