With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Philip James McGill, who died peacefully on April 18, 2025, at the age of 75 in Sahuarita, Arizona.
Born in Norwich, Connecticut, on May 31, 1949, Philip was the son of Dorris Ann (Dunkel) McGill and John Joseph McGill. He was a proud Irish-American, known for his deep love of Irish culture, his talent for playing the bagpipes—often heard echoing across California—and his passion for American-made cars. Above all, he will be remembered for his unwavering optimism and generous spirit.
Philip earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Rhode Island and went on to serve in the U.S. Army as a Specialist. After completing his military service, he returned home before settling in California, where he met the love of his life, Dianna. He managed a Thrifty’s store in Modesto before finding his true calling in education with the Stockton Unified School District. A dedicated educator, he was honored as Teacher of the Year in 2023.
Philip is survived by his beloved wife, Dianna McGill; his children, Conor McGill, Nicole Prudhel, and Joshua Prudhel; his daughters-in-law, Stephanie Prudhel and Keila Conner; his siblings, Diane Belli and John McGill; brother-in-law John Belli; sister-in-law Ketty McGill; and his treasured grandchildren, Brooklyn Mountjoy, Caleb Mountjoy, Addisyn Prudhel, and Aiden Prudhel. He is also fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A funeral service will be held on May 2 at 10:00 a.m. at Allen Mortuary, 247 N. Broadway, Turlock, CA 95380, with a graveside service to follow at Ceres Cemetery.
Philip’s warmth, wisdom, and joyful presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
