Richard (Rick) James Little February 23, 1947 - June 3, 2024

Date of Service

November 29, 2024

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Richard James Little, 77, who left us on June 3, 2024, at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson, CA after a long battle with leukemia. Born on February 23, 1947, in Modesto, CA, Rick was a beloved father, grandfather, former husband, and friend, whose generosity, work ethic, and kindness touched the lives of everyone who knew him.

He attended Weaver Grammar Schools and graduated from Merced High School in 1964.

In his early years, Rick proudly served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Long Beach. Serving in the Navy was something he was always very proud of.

After leaving the Navy, Rick’s career spanned over 40 years in the grocery business, where he served the community in various roles at Safeway, Save Mart, and Raley’s. His dedication and hard work were admired by colleagues and customers alike, and he made a lasting impact in every community he worked.

Beyond his professional life, Rick is survived by his former wife, Janice Brawley, his children, Rick (Sylvia) Little and Rachelle (Paul) Heppner, and a proud Poopa to his grandchildren, Seth (Carley) Heppner, Ethan Heppner, Christian Heppner, Adam Little, and Sofia Little. Rick’s love for his family was boundless, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

In his younger years, Rick was deeply involved in his children’s activities, serving as a coach, referee, and volunteer coordinator for McSwain Schools sports. He was also an active 4-H leader, spending weekends helping kids with their livestock and ensuring that every detail was perfect for the county fair. His commitment to his community extended to his work with Relay for Life after his own diagnosis of prostate cancer and then leukemia. Rick played an instrumental role in organizing the event at Merced College, demonstrating his belief in the importance of supporting others in times of need.

Rick was known by friends and family for his unwavering willingness to help. Whether it was fixing a car, tackling a DIY project, or lending a hand to someone in need, no job was ever too big or too small. He was a lifelong lover of fishing, especially with his childhood friend, Pat Polzine, and he treasured his conversations with his other dear childhood friend Pat (Freeman) Tweedle.

Rick’s legacy lives on in the countless people he helped and the lives he touched. He was a man who believed in the power of positivity and community, and he leaves behind a memory of generosity, strength, and quiet dignity.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kayla Bernardi BEE Positive Foundation. Those can be mailed to Stanislaus Community Foundation ATTN: Kayla Bernardi BEE Positive 100 Sycamore Avenue Ste 200, Modesto, CA 95354.

Rick supported the foundation due to its mission of spreading positivity and its support for many local community organizations. Kayla bravely fought against leukemia, just as Rick had.

A memorial service to honor Rick’s life will be held at San Joaquin National Cemetery on November 29, 2024, at 10:30 a.m.

He will be missed but never forgotten. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.
