Robert “Bob” L. Vardaman
August 1936 – November 2023
Robert “Bob” L. Vardaman, 87, passed away Thursday November 23, 2023 at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto with his daughter and companion at his side. Bob was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1936 and after his family moved to California he graduated from Pomona High School in 1955. Out of high school, he spent time with Brethren Volunteer Service before making a career in construction building pools, homes, or churches. He enjoyed woodworking, tinkering on cars, playing basketball, baseball, softball, swimming, golf, hiking and travelling. Bob used his musical talent as a percussionist while in high school band, community orchestra, and simply by tapping on the table at home to his favorite tunes.
He liked helping family, friends, and communities across the country and abroad by using his construction experience. He participated in Brethren Disaster Relief trips, rebuilding homes and cabins at Camp Peaceful Pines.
Bob is survived by his daughter Karen (Patrick) Slattery of Fort Wayne, IN; brother Wayne Vardaman of Fort Wayne, IN; sister Sharon Baker of Fort Wayne; sister-in-law Mary (Dan) Hines of Upland, CA; grandsons Christopher Vardaman of Wyoming and Jeremy Vardaman of Texas; two great granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews; and his companion Rose Foster of Modesto and her family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Delbert and Nina Vardaman; brothers Gene Vardaman, Keith Vardaman and Paul Vardaman; sons Kevin Vardaman and Kraig Vardaman.
Celebration of Life gathering will take place on Monday, December 18, 2023 at 10:00a.m. at Modesto Church of The Brethren 2301 Woodland Avenue, Modesto, CA. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made in his memory to the PSWD/COB/Brethren Disaster Ministries 151 South Glendora Avenue Glendora, CA 91741 or Habitat for Humanity 2206 Tanaya Drive Modesto, CA 95354.
