Shirley Louise (Pope) Jones passed away on February 1, 2023 in Turlock, California. Shirley was born on June 29, 1933 in Pocatello, Idaho to Monroe Pope and Mabel Croshaw. Shortly after her birth the family moved to Southern California. After High School graduation she went to work at Bank America and transferred to Turlock when her father sold his stores and moved the family to live by one of his brothers. Her father bought several markets in Turlock and Shirley helped in the family business – “Pope’s Market”.
Shortly after moving to Turlock, Jack Jones came to Turlock to visit the families he served while on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He went to a dance and met Shirley. Jack had been called up for a tour of duty after the Korean War and he and Shirley decided to continue their courtship through letters. Upon his discharge he came back to visit Shirley and ask for her hand in marriage which was soon solemnized in the newly built Los Angeles Temple in July of 1956. Shirley and Jack settled in Oakland, then Fremont. With the birth of six children the family needed a larger home, and moved to Pleasanton, California in 1971 where they raised their family until retirement.
Shirley was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints all of her life. She served in many callings and enjoyed sewing, crafting, and music. After Jack’s retirement they served a mission in Eastland Texas. Upon their return they sold their large family home in Pleasanton and moved to Turlock to be near family in 2004. In their later years they moved with their daughter Holly to Colorado, Idaho, and then back to Turlock. When Shirley’s dementia worsened, Jack and Shirley moved into Golden Age Living in 2019. Shortly after Jack passed away. Shirley remained in the loving care of the Golden Age Living staff until her passing in February of 2023.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her two brothers, Jim and Lamar, and her husband, Jack.
