Sylvia A. (Borelli) Van Hook was born on October 11, 1948, in Turlock, to John and Adeline Borrelli.
Sylvia attended Hilmar until high school and then went to business school. She worked for Turlock Irrigation District (TID) for 30 plus years. On May 3, 1969 she married the love of her life, Russell Van Hook, and together they shared 54 years of marriage. Sylvia enjoyed taking trips to Disneyland with friends from TID and their kids, along with auntie Eloise and her kids. She also enjoyed going on adventures with her crew Barbara, auntie Eloise and Jenny where they went to New York, San Francisco and Pismo Beach. She also loved taking trips with Dad and Uncle Donnie and Aunt Carol to Alaska, Mexico and Hawaii; she also enjoyed taking family trips to Monterey Dunes. Sylvia loved attending the grandkids’ sports events where you would hear her famous phrase “That’s the way!”.
Her most favorite times were family holidays and celebrations. Her favorite holiday for her to be the hostess was Mother’s Day. She absolutely loved every single one of her grandkids, great grandkids, nieces, nephews and Godchildren!
Sylvia is survived by her daughters Doreen (Roy) Gier, Erin Van Hook and Jené Moore; grandchildren Ashley (Phil) Souza, Alyssa (Gerry) Gomez, and Kyle Gier, Blade Moore, Dayton Volk and Austin Van Hook; great grandchildren Lane and Luke Souza and Sophia Gomez and bonus granddaughters Andrea and Addy; sister Yvonne Fortado and brother Don (Phyllis) Borrelli. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Lena Borrelli, sister Sandra (Borrelli) Arkell and grandson Zachery Moore.
On August 15, 2024, Sylvia passed away peacefully at home with her daughters Jene’ and Erin and sister Yvonne by her side.
Memorial mass will be held at All Saints Catholic Church in Turlock on Friday, August 23, 2024, at 10:00a.m. with interment to follow at Hilmar Cemetery and reception at Carnegie Arts Center, 250 N. Broadway in Turlock.
