Umberto (Bert) Hernandez Sr. March 12, 1945 - April 20, 2023

Umberto (Bert) Hernandez was born on March 12, 1945 in Orange Grove, Texas and passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on April 20, 2023 at the age of 78.

Umberto moved to Livingston, CA in 1965. This is where he met the love of his life Maria Bocanegra and they married in October of 1966.  Umberto worked for E & J Gallo Vineyards and in February of 1967 he was drafted into the U.S. Army. His training began in Washington state and his tour of duty was spent mostly in Germany. In January of 1969, he received an honorable discharge and remained in the Army reserves until February of 1973. He was also an active member of the American Legion. He spent 26 years with The County of Merced in the Public Works Department as a civil engineer where he retired.

Umberto was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Santos Hernandez, his sisters Isabella Hernandez and Victoria Arteaga, and his twin brother Heriberto Hernandez. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maria Hernandez, his two sons Umberto (Bert) Hernandez Jr. of Livingston and Alexander Hernandez of Sacramento, and his two daughters Claudia Hernandez (Chandra) of Turlock and Laura Rendon (Christoval) of Livingston, his brother Manuel Hernandez of Buckeye, AZ, his two sisters Maria Chavarria of Alice, TZ and Guadalupe Hernandez of Livingston, and many nephews and nieces.

His pride and joy were his three grandchildren, Christoval, Jonah, and Julianna Rendon, and his one great grandchild, Alessandro Rendon Marin.

Family and friends are invited to a rosary on Thursday May 4, 2023 at 6pm at Allen Mortuary at 247 North Broadway, Turlock, CA. Funeral mass will be held at 11:30am on Friday May 5, 2023 at St. Anthony’s Church, 1799 Winton Way, Atwater, CA. Burial will follow at Winton Cemetary at 7651 W. Almond Ave., Winton, CA.
